After Jimmy Garoppolo‘s rough preseason outing against the Denver Broncos on Monday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said he would like to see the quarterback play more in the team’s third preseason game.
While speaking to reporters Thursday, Shanahan said to expect around a half’s worth of action for Garoppolo.
“I would like [the offensive starters] get a whole half in, but sometimes halves can be 20 plays, sometimes they can be 45,” he said. “So, it’s more about the play count, but you’d like them to get a normal half in.”
Any chance the quarterback plays in the second half?
“We’d like to not put him back out in the third quarter, but if you don’t feel good and you don’t feel like you got the reps, that’s always an option,” he said.
On Saturday, the 49ers will play the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, the site of Garoppolo’s ACL tear in 2018. After that, the team’s final preseason game is at home against the Los Angeles Chargers on Aug. 29.
General manager John Lynch told KNBR on Thursday that there’s almost no chance Garoppolo plays against the Chargers.
“That’s off the table,” he said. “I think we’ve got a plan for the reps and all that. I guess you never say never, but I can’t see that happening.”
Very rarely do any starters — let alone a team’s starting quarterback — see action in the fourth and final game of the NFL preseason.
