49ers to hire two defensive assistants; Buckner to Pro Bowl

The 49ers’ defensive coaching staff is getting restocked.

On Tuesday, the 49ers hired defensive line coach Kris Kocurek, 40, who had the same role with the Dolphins in 2018. They are also expected to hire former Broncos defensive coordinator Joe Woods, 48, as their defensive passing-game coordinator, although Woods has not signed a contract.

Kocurek, who was the Lions defensive line coach from 2010-2017, became available when Miami fired head coach Adam Gase after the season. Kocurek replaces Jeff Zgonina, who was fired after coaching the 49ers defensive linemen the past two seasons.

Kocurek had a brief NFL career after he was a seventh-round pick of the Seahawks in 2001.

“Kris has become one of the most respected defensive line coaches in the NFL over the last decade and has a proven track record of helping his players maximize their abilities,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said. “When he recently became available, we acted aggressively to add him to our staff because his philosophy, and the style of play he coaches, fits our scheme and personnel very well.”

Meanwhile, Woods figures to assume some of the responsibilities of secondary coach Jeff Hafley, who left to become the co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State earlier this month.

Prior to serving as Denver’s defensive coordinator the past two seasons, Woods was the Broncos defensive backs coach from 2015-16. He’s also coached defensive backs with the Raiders (2014), Vikings (2006-2013) and Buccaneers (2004-2005).

Woods will help oversee a secondary that includes a host of recent draft picks who will be vying for starting jobs. That group includes Ahkello Witherspoon, 23, Tarvarius Moore, 22, D.J. Reed, 22, and Adrian Colbert, 25.

Buckner to Pro Bowl: Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner will attend the Pro Bowl as an alternate after he had a career-best 12 sacks.

Buckner will replace Philadelphia’s Fletcher Cox, who was injured in the Eagles’ divisional-playoff loss to the Saints on Sunday.

Buckner’s sack total was the most by a member of the 49ers since Aldon Smith had 19.5 in 2012. Buckner will be joined at the Pro Bowl, which will be Jan. 27 in Orlando, by 49ers tight end George Kittle and fullback Kyle Juszczyk.
