86-year-old woman struck, killed by vehicle in Concord

An 86-year-old Clayton woman was struck and killed by a vehicle as she crossed the street in Concord on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The woman — whose name will not been released until her family is notified — was crossing the street just north of the intersection at Ayers Road and Valley Crest Drive when a vehicle traveling southbound on Ayers Road struck her just before 3:19 p.m., according to Concord Police Department.

She was not walking in a crosswalk at the time, police said.

Traffic investigators with Concord police said the driver, only identified as a 58-year-old Concord resident, was cooperative with police.

Officials said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the fatal incident. It is unclear how fast the motorist was driving at the time.

Anyone who witnessed the incident may contact Justin Wilson, a traffic investigator with the Concord Police Department at 925-671-5962.

Police closed Ayers Road between Clayton Road and Valley Crest Drive for roughly three hours while investigating the scene Wednesday afternoon. Police officers escorted residents living on Valley Crest Drive to their homes during the street closures.
