Amanda Anisimova, 17, reaches quarterfinals at Silicon Valley Classic

Amanda Anisimova moved into the quarterfinals of the Silicon Valley Classic on Thursday, beating Madison Brengle 6-2, 6-2 at San Jose State.

Fifth-seeded Donna Vekic of Croatia also advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Victoria Azarenka, a Belarusian who was once the No. 1-ranked player in the world.

Third-seeded Elise Mertens was eliminated by American Kristie Ahn 6-3, 6-3.

Eighth-seeded Danielle Rose Collins was ousted in a 6-2, 6-0 loss to China’s Saisai Zheng, who will meet Anisimova, the fourth seed, in a quarterfinal.

Citi Open: Caty McNally, a 17-year-old qualifier, reached the quarterfinals of the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., by beating fellow American Christina McHale 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. McNally hadn’t won a main-draw WTA match until this week.

On the men’s side, sixth-seeded Marin Cilic topped ninth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-4 and next could face Nick Kyrgios. Britain’s Kyle Edmund came back to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to advance.
