Check out the gallery above to see how people reacted to U.S. Senator Kamala Harris wearing a Los Angeles Dodgers hat to prep for the second Democratic debate.
U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, who’s running for the Democratic nomination for president, grew up in the East Bay and served as a public official in San Francisco for years. But she wore a decidedly un-San Francisco cap to prep for night two of the second Democratic debate.
Douglas Emhoff, Harris’ husband, tweeted a photo of his wife wearing a Los Angeles Dodgers hat on the debate stage Wednesday afternoon.
“Walk-Thru Chic,” Emhoff, a Dodgers fan, said.
Minutes later, her sister Meena also tweeted out photos of Harris on the debate stage. “BIG PRESIDENTIAL ENERGY,”she wrote.
In the hours after they posted the photos, people on social media weighed in on Harris’ choice of chapeau.
Some people were mad that the Bay Area native, who has previously said she’s a fan of the San Francisco Giants, chose to rep the gear of the Giants’ biggest rival. Others praised her for the hat choice. One journalist thought that Harris was trying to signal that she’s “on the winning team.”
The Giants, who have been on a hot streak, are just a game over .500, while the Dodgers are in first place in the National League West with a 71-39 record.
But Kristen Allen, the spokeswoman for Harris’ campaign, told the Sacramento Bee that Harris’ choice to wear a Dodgers hat didn’t mean she was switching her allegiance.
“She’s a Giants fan. She had to borrow a hat today because she didn’t bring one,” Allen told the Sac Bee.
A campaign spokesperson additionally told The Chronicle that Harris, who is based in Los Angeles, represents all of California.
Harris will be center stage at night two of the second Democratic debate, hosted by CNN, tonight starting at 5 p.m. PST.
