There are a bunch of zeitgeist-y pop culture nods in the new Spider-Man film — and Stephen Curry was cool enough to make the cut.
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” pays homage to the Warriors star with a brief cameo. You’ll need to have your eyes peeled; he’s visible in the background in just a few shots. Keep your focus on the billboards whenever the story veers into Times Square. One of the billboards prominently features Curry — but not in his basketball uniform.
The billboard, which reads “The Golden Boy,” advertises a golf tournament. The fictional RedEx (not a typo) Invitational has Curry playing the event in late June 2019. That would give Curry enough time to finish out the NBA Finals, with a few weeks to spare.
Curry is no stranger to Sony Pictures, the studio that made the film. He signed a partnership with them back in April to produce “family-friendly” entertainment.
Although Curry certainly is an avid golfer, the billboard is one of many clues that this Spider-Man film may not take place in our universe (For the record, that’s not a spoiler. The question isn’t answered in the film, and the concept of parallel universes is central to the plot). Another billboard shows Blake Griffin as a baseball player, and the other entertainment references are just a little bit off too. The biggest clue? A fast food burger meal costs two characters $30,000.
Real-life Curry is actually on the verge of hosting his own golf tournament, though. The Chronicle reported back in October that he’s working with the PGA Tour on possibly bringing a 2019 event to Alameda’s Corica Park.
If you haven’t seen “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” yet — or if you’re gearing up for another viewing — there are plenty of other fun cameos to look for. Chance the Rapper, The Weeknd and Donald Glover are among the other celebs who also get nods in the film.
