Climate activists storm SF’s Financial District, traffic interruptions expected until 5 p.m.

The morning rush-hour traffic in San Francisco’s Financial District was slower than usual Wednesday, and in some cases came to a halt, as climate protesters marched in the core downtown area.

At 9 a.m., several blocks of Montgomery Street were obstructed by the protesters. KCBS Radio reports demonstrations are scheduled to continue until 5 p.m.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the Financial District on Wednesday.

The protest comes after Friday’s youth-led Climate March with thousands of students walking down Market Street.

Today’s strike is focused on banking and demanding that banks divest from the fossil-fuel industry and invest only in companies focused “on technologies that have ecological renewal,” according to KRON-TV.

KRON reports at least four major intersections will be blocked throughout the day.
