Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green lost his jersey number in weight for the NBA playoffs.
Green told The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson III that he lost 23 pounds for the Warriors’ playoff run in the Dubs’ locker room after their Game 3 132-105 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.
“I knew I wasn’t in good shape,” Green told Thompson on Thursday. “But I also know if anybody knows how to get in shape and get in shape quick, I know how. I’ve been doing it all my life.”
He started a “strenuous” diet and workout regimen in early March, according to Thompson’s article. And he wasn’t the only person to notice that he needed to lose some weight. The Warriors’ general manager Bob Myers also knew.
“If we’re going to win a championship,” Myers reportedly told Green, “you’ve got to get in shape.”
Good for Myers, his star forward already had plans to get in shape. He had a nutritionist with a diet plan, a chef making meals for him, and the Warriors’ strength and conditioning team had a workout strategy for Green that would allow him to lose weight while remaining strong.
And Green’s workout plan seems to have paid off. In addition to slimming down, he’s averaged 13 points, 8.7 assists and 5.3 rebounds in the three games the Warriors have played against the Clips.
The Warriors are up 2-1 in the best-of-7 series with the Clippers. Game 4 is on Sunday in Los Angeles.
