Several explosions and huge flames shook Bethel Island on Thursday night, incinerating as many as three homes before firefighters rushed to the scene and began to fight the inferno.
Twenty-foot flames were coming out of three homes next to a levee on the 2700 block of Taylor Road, according to a 5:50 p.m. tweet by the East Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
“First 911 caller reported 20 foot flames and there is additional reports of explosions,” fire officials said via Twitter.
Aimee Montgomery, a Bethel Island resident, was in Oakley getting her 13-year-old son a haircut when she heard the explosion.
“I was a good distance away and I heard the explosion. It was huge,” said Montgomery, 39, who rushed back home only to find Taylor Road, which she uses to get home, blocked off and fire trucks all over the street.
“It was huge flames, a total loss for the first house for sure. There is nothing left. It’s completely gone,” Montgomery said as she waited with dozens of others at Bethel Market, at the end of Taylor Road, about 500 yards from the conflagration. “The other ones are complete losses too, but at least there’s some structure left.”
By 8 p.m. the flames had died down significantly and it appeared firefighters were getting a handle on the three blazes, witnesses said. No injuries had yet been reported.
