The Falcons ended a 12-game losing streak in the preseason with a 31-12 victory at Jacksonville on Thursday night.
They also seemingly found a solution to their kicking woes. Matt Bryant is scheduled to try out for coaches at the team’s training facility Friday. The 44-year-old could sign for a 19th NFL season, his 11th with Atlanta.
Even before Giorgio Tavecchio (a Campolindo-Moraga and Cal alum) missed his fifth field-goal attempt of the preseason, the Falcons had plans to bring back Bryant.
Tavecchio was wide left from 53 yards late in the second quarter. He fell to 4-for-9 on field-goal attempts this preseason, also missing from 54, 52, 52 and 39 yards.
Other games: Undrafted rookie Tyree Jackson hit David Sills for an 8-yard touchdown with eight seconds left in rallying the Bills to a 27-23 win over the visiting Vikings. … Taylor Bertolet kicked two field goals for the game’s only scores, but missed three other attempts in his bid to make New York’s roster as the Jets topped the visiting Eagles 6-0 in a snoozer of a preseason finale. … Rookie Austin Seibert appeared to win Cleveland’s kicking job after a summer-long competition, hitting field goals of 36 and 33 yards as the Browns beat the visiting Lions 20-16.
QB chosen: The Dolphins named 14-year veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick their starting quarterback over Josh Rosen.
Career in doubt: Seattle cornerback Kalan Reed’s neck injury that landed him on injured reserve Tuesday likely also ended his career, according to a report confirmed by the Seattle Times. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted that Reed’s agent, Harold Lewis, said injuries to Reed’s third and fourth vertebrae caused numbing and “put him at serious risk if he plays again.”
Hunt hurt: Cleveland running back Kareem Hunt will spend part of his NFL suspension rehabbing after surgery. Hunt, who will serve an eight-game ban for two physical off-field altercations in 2018 while he played for Kansas City, had a sports-hernia operation. He is expected to be fully recovered by the time he’s eligible to return for the Nov. 10 game against Buffalo.
Trades: The Packers agreed to send linebacker Reggie Gilbert to the Titans for a conditional 2020 draft pick. Gilbert played all 16 games for Green Bay last season and had 15 quarterback pressures to rank second on the team. … Cleveland acquired offensive lineman Wyatt Teller and a seventh-round draft pick from Buffalo for a fifth-round pick in 2020 and a sixth-round selection in 2021. … Arizona traded offensive lineman Korey Cunningham to the Patriots for a 2020 sixth-round pick.
