Fire in Oakland pumps out cloud of black smoke

A fire broke out in Oakland Monday morning, pumping out a towering column of black smoke viewable from around the Bay Area.

The Oakland Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at 2000 Solano Way near BART tracks at 8:28 a.m, according to the Oakland Fire Department. The fire quickly spread to a warehouse occupied by American Emperor at 1900 East 12th St. The business sells electrical equipment, lighting fixtures and HVAC systems.

Videos of the blaze show flames rising above the roof and extending out of windows. KCBS Radio reports the fire has gutted the building.

As of 9:15 a.m., fire officials told KTVU that they did not anticipate delays in BART service.

The fire scene is near the I-880, and drivers can expect some sluggish traffic in the area. You can monitor the latest traffic conditions on SFGATE’s traffic page.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

We will update the story with more details as they become available.
