Great Mall in Milpitas on lockdown amid police activity after reported robbery attempt

The Great Mall of the Bay Area is on lockdown while Milpitas police conduct a search of the mall after several unconfirmed reports of shooting on Sunday evening.

The Milpitas Police Department tweeted on Sunday that they were aware of people on social media reporting hearing shots fired at the mall.  But while investigating police reported there was “no evidence that shots were fired.”

While officers conducted a sweep of the mall, they asked people inside of the mall to shelter-in-place “out of an abundance caution.” Police added that they were escorting mall employees and shoppers to the parking lots.

KTVU reported that an official with the City of Milpitas said an attempted robbery at a jewelry store caused mall patrons to think a shooting had occurred. No victims have been located and any suspects are still at large, according to KTVU.

This story is developing and will be updated as details emerge.
