'I might fire him asap!': Smash Mouth is irrationally upset at Bruce Bochy's retirement

Giants Manager Bruce Bochy has plans for a well-deserved stroll into the sunset, but as far as one Northern California band is concerned, he might as well be “Walkin’ On The Sun.”

As news of Bochy’s planned retirement broke this weekend, many fans reacted with a mix of gratitude mixed and sadness that the three-time World Series champion would no longer be around after the 2019 season. The person behind the official Twitter account for the band Smash Mouth had a different take.

“You DON’T announce you’re retiring the season before! Love him but I might fire him asap! Sorry,…….Stupid ass move!!!!” the verified @smashmouth account declared.

Giants fans reacted swiftly to Smash Mouth’s tweet, and the account operator did try to elaborate a bit further on their thinking.

“If I’m a Free Agent I want to know who’s going to be my manager the next few years,” one comment by Smash Mouth reads, suggesting the band is worried that the team will miss out on Bryce Harper or some other big ticket free agent as a result of the move.

After a string of angry fan memes and some accusations of A’s fan loyalties, the band made a full-throated I’m a Believer‘ statement:

“Obviously he got the Giants blessing before he did it but it just feels odd. No hard feelings though, GIANTS FOREVER and LOVE BOCHY FOREVER!”

This isn’t the first time the band has drawn attention for weighing in on Bay Area sports. The group got into a Twitter spat with the A’s in 2016 after calling the franchise a “a joke” during the 2016 World Series.
