San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said he has been “surprised” by Jimmy Garoppolo’s speedy recovery from a torn ACL that ended his season prematurely.
“He looks good, I’m not allowed to be working with him right now, but I was in the office a couple of days ago, I was stalking him while watching him out my window,” Shanahan said during a Friday appearance on KNBR’s “Murph & Mac” show.
“He actually surprised me, he was running around, throwing, doing some stuff out of the pocket,” he told the mornings show crew. “I even had to call our trainer and ask ‘should he be moving that much?’ and he said he should be. It’s cool to see.”
General manager John Lynch said last week that Garoppolo is expected to be ready for the start of the team’s spring offseason program.
“We’re hopeful he’s going to get to take part in our OTAs,” Lynch told NFL Network. “That’s the plan, and he hasn’t had any setbacks, so he’s doing really well. I’m really proud of him too.”
According to Lynch, running back Jerick “Jet” McKinnon, who suffered a torn ACL prior to the start of the regular season, is also expected to be ready for OTAs.
“Jimmy is vigorously trying to catch Jet, who is trying to separate from Jimmy, and so there’s competition going on as well,” Lynch said. “I think both those guys will tell you that’s really helped them, [having] somebody to go through it with. It’s fun.”

McKinnon was signed to a four-year deal worth $36.9 million during the 2018 offseason, and was expected to be the team’s lead back.
In addition to Garoppolo’s rehab, Shanahan discussed changes to the coaching staff, his takeaways from the Senior Bowl and more during his KNBR appearance.
