Jed York says he punched a wall, thought he broke his wrist after Jimmy Garoppolo injury

The San Francisco 49ers suffered through an injury-riddled season in 2018, and team owner Jed York says he almost suffered a serious injury of his own.

During the NFL owners meetings on Monday, York said he punched a wall and thought he broke his wrist after learning that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL during the team’s Week 3 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I’m glad I wasn’t on IR,” York said, per NBC Sports Bay Area. “I was close in Kansas City. I thought I broke my wrist in Kansas City when I heard he tore his ACL.”

The 49ers owner said he hit a stud when he punched the wall.

“It was a good punch,” York said. “Unfortunately, it was a stud. You’ve got to find the dry wall. That’s the key. It looks so much better to put a hole through the wall, as opposed to finding the stud.”

Garoppolo tore his ACL during the fourth quarter of the team’s 38-27 loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Garoppolo was forced to miss the remainder of the season; the team went 3-10 in his absence.

Running back Jerick McKinnon also tore his ACL prior to the start of regular season, and the 49ers placed 17 players on injured reserve last season. York said that while the injuries were difficult, he believes that the rehabilitation process “builds character.”

“I think our guys have been very strong-willed and tough-minded,” he said. “They are able to fight through those things. It allows you to build character on your team, and I hope that will serve us well going forward.”

In February, head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Garoppolo is progressing well, and his speedy recovering has been “surprising.”

“He actually surprised me; he was running around, throwing, doing some stuff out of the pocket,” Shanahan said. “I even had to call our trainer and ask ‘should he be moving that much?’ and he said he should be. It’s cool to see.”

General manager John Lynch said in January that Garoppolo is expected to be ready for the team’s offseason training program in the spring.
