John Daly is free to ride a cart during the week of the British Open — just not at Royal Portrush.
The R&A announced Tuesday that Daly had withdrawn from the British Open “due to a medical condition.” Earlier, the organization denied Daly’s request to use a cart.
Daly’s manager said later Tuesday he is likely to play the Barbasol Championship next week in Kentucky, and the two-time major champion with osteoarthritis in his right knee already has been granted a cart to use in the PGA Tour event.
Andy Pazder, the chief tournaments and competition officer for the PGA Tour, said Daly late last year was approved to use a cart through 2019 at PGA Tour events and PGA Tour Champions events that require walking.
Daly, who has not played a regular PGA Tour event since the Greenbrier last summer, also is contemplating the Barracuda Championship in Reno the following week.

Bucks re-sign Hill
The Milwaukee Bucks re-signed free-agent guard George Hill, who was acquired from Cleveland in December in a five-player, three-team trade, to a three-year deal.
Hill, 33, averaged 6.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists over 47 games with the Bucks last season. He also played in all 15 of Milwaukee’s playoff games, averaging 11.5 points on 53.4% shooting in just more than 26 minutes per game.
• The Los Angeles Clippers signed draft picks and former Florida State teammates Mfiondu Kabengele and Terance Mann to undisclosed deals. Kabengele, a 6-foot-10 forward, was selected 27th overall in last month’s draft. Mann, a 6-6 guard, was picked 48th overall.
College basketball: Mickey McConnell, the 2010-11 WCC Player of the Year, is returning to St. Mary’s as an assistant coach on Randy Bennett’s staff. McConnell, a guard, has played professionally, mainly in Europe, for the past eight years.
McConnell hit two signature shots in his career with the Gaels: a 3-pointer off the glass that put St. Mary’s ahead to stay in its 75-68 NCAA Tournament win over Villanova in 2010 and an off-balance jumper in the final seconds to beat Gonzaga 73-71 in Spokane a year later.
McConnell replaces Danny Yoshikawa, who’s leaving Moraga to become the head coach of West Valley College.

WNBA: Kayla Thornton scored 10 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter and the host Dallas Wings beat the Los Angeles Sparks 74-62.
NHL: The Chicago Blackhawks traded defenseman Henri Jokiharju, a rookie last season, to the Buffalo Sabres for forward Alex Nylander.
Chicago is hoping a chance of scenery will help Nylander, 21, who had three goals and three assists in just 19 games with the Sabres over three seasons.
Alex’s father, Michael, played for the Blackhawks from 1999 through 2002.
NFL: Former Detroit and Houston safety Glover Quin, who was released in February by the Lions, retired after 10 seasons in the NFL.
