Senator and 2020 Democratic nomination candidate Kamala Harris, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Apple CEO Tim Cook and more all expressed grief in reaction to the shooting of people worshiping inside of a San Dieg0-area synagogue on Saturday.
“Charleston, Pittsburgh, Quebec, New Zealand – now our own Poway, California,” wrote California Governor Gavin Newsom on Twitter in the hours following a shooting at Chabad of Poway that killed one and injured three.
“No one should ever fear going to their place of worship. Hate continues to fuel horrific and cowardly acts of violence across our state, country, and world. It must be called out. CA stands with Poway.”
San Diego County law enforcement officials said that a 19-year-old gunman opened fire inside of the synagogue, killing one woman, and wounding the synagogue’s rabbi and two others on the last day of the Jewish holiday Passover.
“Yet again a place of worship is the target of senseless gun violence and hate. Anti-Semitism is real in this country and we must not be silent – enough is enough. My heart aches for the Chabad of Poway synagogue and the Jewish community,” Harris wrote on Twitter. Harris had made gun violence a major part of her platform in her campaign for the Democratic nomination for the presidency in 2020.
“We are devastated by another act of violence targeting people in their place of worship on this last day of Passover,” Cook wrote on Twitter. “We stand with the Chabad of Poway synagogue and denounce hatred in all its forms, today and always.”
President Donald Trump and other elected officials are calling the attack — which happened six months to the day after a gunman opened fire inside of a Pittsburgh synagogue and killed 11 — a hate crime.
“We are closely following the situation surrounding today’s shooting at Chabad synagogue in Poway, CA. We remain deeply grateful to first responders & community members working to protect their neighbors. We share in the grief of all who have been affected & their families,” Pelosi wrote on Twitter.
“Coming just six months after the horrific mass shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, we are confronted with what appears to be another anti-Semitic attack. We all stand with the Jewish community against this act of hate.”
