Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant took to Instagram to defend former teammate Patrick McCaw following a report from The Athletic that alleged McCaw became unhappy after the team signed guard Nick Young prior to the 2017-2018 season.
According to The Athletic, the now-departed McCaw’s “first grievance” with the Warriors was the team’s decision to sign the mercurial Young, also known as Swaggy P (or more recently, Swag Champ), to compete with McCaw to be the team’s backup shooting guard.
GSW.ALL.DAY, a Warriors fan page on Instagram, posted a photo of McCaw and Young with a summary of The Athletic’s reporting.
Before long, Durant commented on the image: “LET PAT LIVE. Move on.”
McCaw became a restricted free agent at the end of the 2017-2018 season and declined the Warrior’s qualifying offer. The bizarre stalemate between McCaw and the Warriors drew a great deal of fan and media attention.
He was finally signed by the Cleveland Cavaliers to a non-guaranteed two-year, $6 million offer sheet in December, and the Warriors opted not to match it.
The Cavaliers waived McCaw eight days later, and he signed with the Toronto Raptors on Thursday.
