Kevin Durant‘s teammates were not happy about the way some Raptors fans reacted to the Warriors star’s Achilles injury in Game 5 of the 2019 NBA Finals.
After Durant went down, a handful of fans could be seen cheering and waving goodbye as he sat on the ground holding his right leg. Other fans in the arena could also be heard cheering, although it is air-quotes “possible” they were cheering at the turnover that occurred before Durant fell to the ground.
While the Warriors medical staff went to check on Durant, Raptors players Kyle Lowry and Danny Green quieted the cheering crowd, and the fans at Scotiabank Arena gave the former MVP a standing ovation on the way out.
The fans outside of the arena at “Jurassic Park” weren’t as classy. A video of the crowd reacting to Durant’s injury went viral after the game, and shows the crowd first cheering after the turnover, and then again after ESPN’s Mike Breen can be heard saying “and Durant is down.” The ESPN cameras showed Durant on the ground not long after Breen said this, so it’s probably safe to say this is what fans were reacting to.
A number of Warriors players including Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and DeMarcus Cousins voiced their displeasure with the Raptors fans that celebrated the injury.
“I’m very confused around that reaction,” Curry said after the game. “It’s not my experience with people of this city and I commend, obviously, Danny Green and Kyle Lowry, especially. I think they were the ones that were kind of signaling to the crowd like, ‘OK, let’s check each other a little bit and understand this is about an individual human being… Again, that’s not my experience with this city, and I just hope that ugliness doesn’t show itself again as we go forward in this series.”
Green, Cousins and Thompson were a bit stronger in their condemnation.
“Trash,” Cousins said of the Raptors fans who celebrated. “So trash. We’re all idolized as superstar athletes. We’re not human beings. It’s always about what we can do between those lines. That’s it. That’s all that ever matters.”
“That’s crazy,” Green said of the situation. “That’s classless. For me, I’ve always witnessed Canadians being the nicest people that I’ve ever encountered, and that was classless.”
“It was bulls—,” Thompson said. “That was freaking ridiculous. I can’t even put into words how mad I was about that.”
After the game, Warriors GM Bob Myers tearfully confirmed Durant suffered an Achilles injury, and said there is no one to blame.
“I don’t believe that there’s anybody to blame,” Myers said. “But I understand that this world and if you have to, you can blame me. I run our basketball operations department.”
Durant will undergo an MRI sometime on Tuesday to determine the severity of the Achilles injury.
