Jordan Caroline, an undrafted rookie out of Nevada, scored 20 points to lift Los Angeles to its first Summer League triumph, 88-87 over the Warriors in Las Vegas.
Guard Kevin McClain scored 24 points for Golden State (3-2), hitting five 3s, including one from several feet behind the arc at the halftime horn. McClain is a rookie from Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn.
Jaron Johnson, who has spent several recent pro seasons overseas in France, Israel and Australia, scored 19 points for the Lakers (1-4)..
• The Minnesota Timberwolves made it official, signing former Warriors forward/center Jordan Bell in a deal that was first reported July 1. Bell spent two seasons with the Warriors and was their starter at center in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
The 6-foot-9 Bell averaged 3.9 points and 3.1 rebounds in 12.8 minutes per game over 125 games. Terms of the deal were not announced.
Drug charges for ex-pitcher Gooden
Former New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden has been charged with drug possession in Holmdel, N.J., after a traffic stop last month in which two plastic baggies allegedly containing cocaine were found in Gooden’s car.
Gooden, 54, has been charged with cocaine possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of drugs.
The ex-pitcher won the National League Cy Young Award with the Mets in 1985 and was a member of the Mets’ 1986 World Series championship team. He was suspended from baseball for part of the 1994 season and all of the 1995 season after testing positive for cocaine.
NFL: The Green Bay Packers reported a profit of just $724,000 in their latest fiscal year, which included their second straight season without a playoff appearance and a large contract extension for quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Green Bay’s profit in the year ending March 31 was down 98% from $34.1 million in the year ending March 2018 and more than 99% from the record $75 million in the previous fiscal year.
“From a financial standpoint, it was a unique year for the Packers,” Packers president Mark Murphy said.
Expenses rose from $420.9 million to $477.2 million, boosted by Rodgers’ $134 million, four-year deal and the contracts for several free agents: outside linebackers Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith, safety Adrian Amos and guard Billy Turner.
• Jets tight end Chris Herndon was suspended without pay by the NFL for the first four regular-season games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
College football: San Jose State and USC will face each other in a Sept. 7, 2024 non-conference game in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
NHL: The Buffalo Sabres re-signed forward Johan Larsson to a one-year contract worth $1.55 million.
• The Blues acquired forward Dakota Joshua from the Toronto Maple Leafs for future considerations.
WNBA: Elizabeth Williams scored 17 points, Alex Bentley added 10, including a late 3-pointer, and the host Atlanta Dream beat the Minnesota Lynx 60-53 to spoil Sylvia Fowles’ history-making game. Fowles had 12 points and 12 rebounds, giving her 157 career double-doubles to tie the WNBA record of Lisa Leslie. … Nneka Ogwumike had 22 points, six rebounds and six steals to lead the Los Angeles Sparks to a road victory over the Indiana Fever 90-84. … Alyssa Thomas had 20 points and 10 rebounds and the Connecticut Sun beat the Phoenix Mercury 79-64 on Friday night to spoil Diana Taurasi’s season debut after coming back from back surgery. … Courtney Vandersloot scored 17 points and tied her season high with 12 assists in the Chicago Sky’s 99-83 home victory over the New York Liberty.
