The Golden State Warriors are easily America’s most-despised NBA team, but guard Klay Thompson believes NBA fans appreciate the Warriors’ style of play more than being tired of seeing the same team win all the time.
Thompson, along with teammates Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston, sat down for an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Jon Wertheim that will air on CBS’s “60 Minutes” Sunday night.
Wertheim asked the players if they care whether they are well-liked, to which Curry said he doesn’t care as long as the team is winning.
“We like winning. So whatever comes with that, that’s what we enjoy the most,” Curry said. “Narratives pop up out of nowhere and you’re forced to deal with them or not. And how much, you know, we are in front of the world in terms of games that matter, playing in the Finals year after year, all that type of stuff, that just comes with the territory a little bit. So it’s a matter of perspective, how you deal with it.”

Thompson believes that people actually enjoy seeing the Warriors so often.
“I think people like when we play,” he said. “It’s exciting. The ball moves. I mean, we got a guy who can score from anywhere, a guy who shoot from anywhere. Dudes who can fly over the rim. I know the kids love playin’ with us in [NBA] 2K, so I think we’re still cool amongst the youth.”
A Twitter map made in December 2018 by sports analytic site ZCodeSystem.com revealed the most-hated NBA team by state, and the Warriors won (lost?) in 26 states.
In each state, a query was run for phrases such as “I hate (insert team)” as well as other “negative phrases” directed towards teams or players.
But Thompson said he usually roots for the “frontrunner.”
“I mean, I usually like the best teams in sports,” he said. “When I was kid, I was a frontrunner. I just loved the best teams. I liked the Vikings when they had [Randy] Moss. The Lakers were them at the time I was a kid. And I’m sure I would’ve loved the Warriors as well.”
Curry, Thompson, Durant, Iguodala and Livingston also discussed the arrival of DeMarcus Cousins, what it’s like to play for head coach Steve Kerr, and the team’s upcoming move to San Francisco.
