Madison Bumgarner trade talks reportedly in flux

Prior to the month of July, most people assumed it was a matter of when, and not if, the San Francisco Giants would trade starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner to a playoff contender in need of another arm.

But after an unexpected run of success that has seen the team win 14 of its last 16 games, reach .500 for the first time this season, and pull within two games of the final NL Wild Card spot, the Giants are reportedly undecided on trading the former World Series MVP.

On Friday, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported that Bumgarner “raised his trade value” after a dominant nine-inning outing against the New York Mets on Thursday night, but the Giants may choose to hang on to him for a playoff push.

“The question now is whether he’ll be traded at all,” Heyman tweeted. “One interested exec says he’d already sensed the Giants had ‘pulled back’ in talks. Interesting call now: gutty team that’s hot vs. huge trade commodity.”

Later on Friday, Andy Martino, a New York Yankees reporter for SNY, cited sources who said the Giants were “genuinely undecided” on whether to trade Bumgarner or reliever Will Smith.

“A person with direct knowledge of the team’s plans said plainly that Bumgarner and Smith are not available at the moment,” Martino reported.

Martino also reported that evaluators who watched Bumgarner’s latest outing were not overly impressed.

“It wasn’t great, but he gets some swing and miss on his slider and has thrown a few good changes,” an evaluator told Martino. “His fastball is 91 and OK. He had quite a few balls hit hard for outs.”

For his part, Bumgarner has been unfazed by the trade chatter.

“I don’t give a s—,” Bumgarner said of the trade speculation Thursday night. “I’m here to win games for this team, and that’s what we’re doing.”

The trade deadline is July 31.
