Man’s body found by family after Christmas day crash near Fremont

The body of a man who crashed and abandoned his vehicle the night of Christmas near Fremont was located after his family searched the area Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Dispatchers received reports of a vehicle that had caught fire at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the northbound lanes of Highway 85 just north of Fremont, said Officer Dave Morey, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.

Officers arrived and found a silver Toyota Rav4 that had crashed into the concrete center median of the highway. CHP officers from Redwood City and San Jose, as well as the Mountain View Fire Department, searched the area but didn’t find a victim, Morey said.

The next morning, the victim’s family members went to the general area of the crash and started looking for him. Morey said he doesn’t know how the family was notified of the crash. They called 911 after finding the man’s body.

The victim extricated himself from the vehicle, walked across the southbound lanes of the highway and went up an embankment, according to CHP.

“That’s where he died,” Morey said.

The family of the victim requested that his name not be released.

The crash remains under investigation.
