Marquette’s Markus Howard scores 53 in OT win over Creighton

Markus Howard scored 14 of his 53 points in overtime after Marquette’s Sam Hauser’s deep three-pointer at the end of regulation tied the game, and the No. 21 Golden Eagles beat host Creighton 106-104 on Wednesday.

Howard’s 53 points were the most by a player in a game matching Division I teams this season. His effort also was the highest-scoring performance ever by a Creighton opponent.

“I guess we shouldn’t be surprised anymore,” Marquette head coach Steve Wojciechowski said. “He’s done it enough where on certain nights, he’s capable of being magical.”

Howard scored 52 in a game last season and had a 40-point half in December. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Howard is the only Division I player who has multiple career 50-point games over the past 20 seasons.

Marquette (13-3, 2-1 Big East) did not lead until Howard scored on his team’s first possession of overtime.

Ty-Shon Alexander had 23 points for the Bluejays (10-6, 1-2).

#4 Virginia 83, Boston College 56: Mamadi Diakite and De’Andre Hunter scored 18 points apiece to lead the visiting Cavaliers (14-0, 2-0 ACC) past the Eagles (9-5, 0-2).

#7 Kansas 77, #25 TCU 68: Dedric Lawson had 31 points and 14 rebounds as the host Jayhawks (12-2, 2-1 Big 12) defeated the Horned Frogs (12-2, 1-1).

#9 Virginia Tech 52, Georgia Tech 49: Ahmed Hill scored 15 points and Kerry Blackshear Jr. added 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the visiting Hokies (14-1, 3-0 ACC) past the Yellow Jackets (9-6, 1-1).

#10 Nevada 92, San Jose State 53: Caleb Martin scored 23 points to lead four Wolf Pack players in double figures as host Nevada (15-1, 2-1 Mountain West) routed the Spartans (3-11, 0-2). Brae Ivey led San Jose State with 10 points.

Mississippi 82, #11 Auburn 67: Terence Davis had 27 points and 12 rebounds for the host Rebels (12-2, 2-0 SEC) against the Tigers (11-3, 0-1).

#13 Florida State 68, Miami 62: David Nichols had 13 points and PJ Savoy scored eight of his 10 in the second half as the host Seminoles (12-2, 1-1 ACC) held off the Hurricanes (8-6, 0-3).

Rutgers 64, #16 Ohio State 61: Montez Mathis scored 16 points and Geo Baker added 15 to lead the host Scarlet Knights (8-6, 1-3 Big Ten) by the Buckeyes (12-3, 2-2). Kaleb Wesson scored 18 points Ohio State.

Temple 73, #17 Houston 69: Quinton Rose scored 22 points and the host Owls (12-3, 2-1 American) beat the Cougars (15-1, 2-1), whose loss left Michigan and Virginia as the only Division I teams without a loss.


UConn wins easily

Katie Lou Samuelson scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and No. 3 UConn scored the first 17 points of the game en route to an 82-38 win over visiting Cincinnati.

Christyn Williams scored 19 points and Crystal Dangerfield added 11 points and 10 assists for the Huskies (13-1, 2-0 American).

Sacred Heart Cathedral alum IImar’I Thomas, who had scored at least 20 points in each of her previous four games, was held to nine for Cincinnati (9-6, 1-1).

#4 Baylor 65, Kansas State 50: Kalani Brown had 16 points and Lauren Cox added 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the host Lady Bears (12-1, 2-0 Big 12) past the Wildcats (10-5, 1-2).

Nevada 52, San Jose State 49: Jade Redmon scored 18 points for the Wolf Pack (5-9, 1-2 Mountain West), who held off the host Spartans (1-12, 0-2). Fieme’a Hafoka, who scored 13 points for San Jose State, had a chance to tie the score but missed a three-point attempt with two seconds left.
