Minjee Lee wins LA Open for 5th LPGA Tour title

Minjee Lee won the LA Open on Sunday at Wilshire Country Club for her fifth LPGA Tour title, closing with a 3-under-par 68 for a four-stroke victory.

The 22-year-old Australian was projected to jump from fourth to second in the world ranking Monday after her fourth top-three finish in her past seven starts.

“The first half of the year that I’ve had, I’ve been hitting it pretty solid and playing pretty solid,” Lee said. “I felt like it was close. I feel pretty good with this one.”

Lee made a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-3 18th to finish at 14-under 270. She led the last three days, shooting 66-69-67.

Sei Young Kim (66) was second. Annie Park (67) and Morgan Pressel (68) tied for third at 9-under.

• Ryan Palmer and Jon Rahm shot a 3-under 69 in the alternate-shot final round of the Zurich Classic in Avondale, La., and won the PGA Tour’s only team event by three shots over Sergio Garcia and Tommy Fleetwood.

• Tom Pernice Jr. and Scott Hoch completed a wire-to-wire victory in the PGA Tour Champions’ Bass Pro Shops Legends in Ridgedale, Mo.

• Spaniard Jorge Campillo overcame a poor start in the fourth and final round before posting a 2-under 71 to win the Trophee Hassan II by two shots in Rabat, Morocco.

Motor sports: Chase Elliott won the Cup Series race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, giving Chevrolet its first victory of the season. He won for the first time since October and went to victory lane about 100 miles from his hometown in Georgia. Hendrick Motorsports teammate Alex Bowman was second.

• Valtteri Bottas beat Lewis Hamilton in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the fourth Mercedes one-two in four races.

Soccer: In MLS, Stanford alum Jordan Morris scored for the host Seattle Sounders in the first minute before Carlos Vela countered for Los Angeles FC three minutes later in a 1-1 tie. … Angelo Rodriguez scored in the 82nd minute and host Minnesota United beat D.C. United to end a three-game winless streak. … Omar Browne scored in the 83rd minute in his MLS debut to lift host Montreal past Chicago 1-0. … Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Uriel Antuna scored and the host L.A. Galaxy beat Real Salt Lake 2-1.

Running: Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the London Marathon for a record fourth time in the second-fastest time ever, 2 hours, 2 minutes and 37 seconds. Compatriot Brigid Kosgei won the women’s race by almost two minutes.

Tennis: Dominic Thiem won the Barcelona Open for his second title of the year, 6-4, 6-0 over Daniil Medvedev.

Water polo: USC’s Paige Hauschild scored with 43 seconds remaining in the third overtime as the second-ranked Trojans (26-1) pulled out a 9-8 win at No. 1 Stanford (20-2) in the MPSF championship match.

Pac-12 baseball: Brandon Wulff homered twice and Duke Kinamon hit a grand slam as second-ranked Stanford (31-7, 15-3) cruised to a 13-5 romp over visiting Arizona (19-22, 7-14). … Jonny DeLuca capped Oregon’s seven-run fifth inning with a grand slam as the Ducks (23-18, 8-10) salvaged the finale of a three-game series at Cal (23-15, 10-8) with a 12-4 rout.
