One baby dies, another in hospital after being abandoned in Fairfield

One baby has died and another has been taken to a hospital after the two newborns were apparently abandoned near a dumpster in Fairfield on Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Fairfield officers were called to the 300 block of Pittman Road at 4:11 p.m., after an employee called about a woman with two infants who “appeared to have been recently birthed on the sidewalk behind the businesses,” police said in a statement.

Upon arrival, officers found the two babies without their mother, and began life-saving efforts on one newborn before other first-responders continued their care and took the infant to the hospital. That baby is currently in stable condition, according to officers.

The other baby was found to have died before police arrived.

A woman located in the area during the investigation was determined to be possibly associated with the newborns, police stated, and “based on the officers’ observations” appeared to have recently given birth.

The woman was subsequently detained and taken to a hospital for treatment.

This is a developing story. SFGATE has reached out to the Fairfield Police Department and will update with more details as it becomes available.
