Quakes lose season opener to Impact

Saphir Taider punched home a well-placed cross from Zakaria Diallo in the 44th minute and the Montreal Impact opened the season with a 2-1 win over the host San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.

Ignacio Piatti tied it at 1 for the Impact with a rocket in the 29th minute. Piatti took Taider’s short corner and weaved into a soft spot in the defense to get an opening for the close-range shot.

Magnus Eriksson gave the Earthquakes the lead in the 11th minute, turning on Valeri Qazaishvili’s pass and sending in a left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Coach Matias Almeyda made his Earthquakes debut.

U.S. women draw with England 2-2

The Americans have scored twice in each of their first two games of the SheBelieves Cup. They’ve also allowed two goals apiece, and now a pair of ties has the United States looking at what must improve before the Women’s World Cup in June.

Tobin Heath scored off her own rebound in the 67th minute, and the United States tied England 2-2 on Saturday in the SheBelieves Cup in Nashville.

“It’s just frustrating,” said Redding native Megan Rapinoe, who scored her 43rd career goal in the 33rd minute. “I feel like there was a lot more in the game for us. But whether it’s in the game or not, you have to go take it, make it happen, and finish and stay focused every minute of it. And we didn’t.”

Japan beat Brazil 3-1 in the opening match Saturday.

The Americans allowed a late goal in Wednesday night’s 2-2 tie with Japan.

The tournament concludes Tuesday night in Tampa, Fla., where the U.S. will play Brazil and England plays Japan.

Europe: Riyad Mahrez came off the bench and scored a late gooal as Manchester City beat Bournemouth 1-0 to climb to the top of the English Premier League standings. The defending champions are two points clear of Liverpool. Also, Romelu Lukaku scored twice and Manchester United beat Southampton 3-2, and Tottenham drew 1-1 with Arsenal. … Ivan Rakitic scored in the first half and FC Barcelona beat Real Madrid for the second time in the last week, 1-0. … Robert Lewandowski’s two goals in Bayern Munich’s 5-1 win at Borussia Moenchengladbach helped him tie the record for goals scored in the Bundesliga by a foreign player. … Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe scored twice in a 2-1 win at Caen.
