A Sacramento man set the bar high for San Francisco Giants and Sacramento Kings fandom in July when he opted to wear jerseys of both teams under his tuxedo to his wedding ceremony.
Anthony Carmichael, 25, said he’s been a devoted fan of the Giants, trying to never miss watching a game, since he was eight years old.
“I’m a diehard Giants fan. I’m only 25, but I’ve been watching the we were losing the World Series in 2002,” Carmichael said before heading off to his shift as a construction worker. “I pretty much watch every game that I can…. It’s a big part of my life.”
The Giants and the Kings are such a big part of his life that he brought the jerseys from the teams with him to his wedding ceremony with his wife Lanissa Carmichael (they got married in 2015, but just saved up enough money for a ceremony). But he didn’t tell her.
Lanissa said they had gotten out of the limousine at the wedding venue when Anthony said he’d forgotten something in limo. She laughed as she remembered the moment.
“What’d you forget?” she asked.
“My jersey,” he said.
“What do you mean?” she said.
“My Giants jersey is in the limo,” he answered.
Lanissa said she was “amused” but “not surprised” by Anthony’s decision to bring his favorite team along for their big day. “I just thought in my head, ‘OK, this has been a stressful day already. I’m not even going to say anything to this. It’s not even worth having a conversation about it.’ I was just like, ‘You know what? Whatever.”
But still, Lanissa knew that it meant a lot to him to be able to rep his favorite teams that day. “Everybody that knows Anthony knows he loves his sports,” she said. “… It really wouldn’t have been Anthony’s wedding without something like that happening.”
There were some boundaries, though. It’s not like he got a Giants-themed tux for the day. And it’s not like he walked down the aisle with a jacket open, cummerbund over the orange and black. He brought the Giants jersey – an Andrew McCutchen jersey – into the wedding venue, but didn’t wear until after the ceremony.
Carmichael said he has a Brandon Crawford jersey, but it’s signed so he opted not to sweat all over it in the Sacramento summer heat. Speaking of which: He did say it wasn’t the most comfortable choice to add an athletic jersey to a penguin suit for a summertime wedding ceremony.
“It was hot…. You know, we don’t get any breeze from the ocean or anything like that like a closer to the Bay Area,” Carmichael said. “I got that thing off as soon as I could, and I definitely got the jacket off.”
As far as his hometown hoops squad, Carmichael wore a De’Aaron Fox jersey to rep the Kings. He said he only wore that jersey for when when he and Lanissa took photos at the iconic Tower Bridge in Old Sacramento after the ceremony (for those keeping tally, Anthony, a Sacramento native, only wore the Kings jersey once, but wore the Giants jersey twice on his special day).
He posted photos of the moment to Twitter a few weeks after the ceremony. “It’s in my blood even on my wedding day,” he wrote in a tweet that accompanied the photo of him with the Giants jersey on.
The photos went viral, with over 700 people liking the Giants tweet and the Twitter account for the Giants offering him congratulations on his wedding.
“That was pretty cool,” he said. “I didn’t expect for it get as many likes as it did. I only have like 30 followers on Twitter. I was just posting it just to post it. And then once I started getting all the feedback, I just thought it was really cool.”
