Sharks Rally For Wild Game 7 Win Over Vegas in Overtime

With four power play goals in less than 3 minutes in the third period, the San Jose Sharks rallied to take the lead then won in overtime 5-4 over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 7 of their first-round series, advancing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Barclay Goodrow scored the winner 18:19 into overtime to send the SAP Center crowd into a frenzy and the Sharks on to a second-round matchup with the Colorado Avalanche.

Sharks captain Joe Pavelski drew a 5-minute major halfway through the third and had to be helped off the ice, leading to San Jose’s improbable flurry, which included two goals from Logan Couture and one each from Tomas Hertl and Kevin Labanc.

The penalty happened on a faceoff in San Jose’s offensive zone when Eakin cross-checked Pavelski in the chest. Paul Stastny then hit Pavelski as he fell to the ice, his helmet slamming down. Pavelski appeared to be knocked out and blood poured out of his mouth that was already injured after taking a puck to the face while scoring a goal in Game 1.

The officials huddled as a dazed Pavelski was helped to the locker room and gave Eakin a five-minute major for cross-checking and a game misconduct.

Vegas applied pressure and pushed for an equalizer in the final 6:39 of regulation. San Jose killed off a Labanc penalty, but the Golden Knights tied the game with 47 seconds remaining in regulation. It was Marchessault’s fourth goal in as many games.

The Shark Tank was rocking from the opening introductions as the fans came out hoping to witness the completion of the best series comeback in franchise history. The Sharks rode that momentum to a strong start but came up empty on two early power plays.

It was the late 5-minute power play that ended up turning everything around the the Sharks.

San Jose goalie Martin Jones stopped 34 shots to follow his franchise record 58-save performance in Game 6.

The Sharks open the second round against Colorado at home on Thursday.
