A seventh grader from San Jose is on his way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee after winning a regional competition Sunday in Pleasanton.

Rashik Gandhasri, from Chaboya Middle School in the Evergreen School District, won the 2019 Bay Area Regional Spelling Bee title in the 14th round when he correctly spelled guanabana.

Vayun Krishna, a sixth-grader from Challenger School-Middlefield in Palo Alto, came in second.

The Bay Area region includes schools in the following counties: Alameda, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Sonoma.

Gandhasri wins an expenses-paid trip to the Scripps National competition in Washington, D.C., in May.
