Right up top: If you haven’t seen episode 3 of season 8 of “Game of Thrones,” turn back now. We’re about to spoil some things.
After years of lead-up, Sunday’s episode of “Game of Thrones” was one of its most heavily anticipated ever. And, as with many highly anticipated pop culture moments, it inevitably disappointed some fans.
One of the major critiques of the episode — which was entirely comprised of an 80-minute battle between the armies of the Night King and the Targaryen-Starks — was the limited involvement of Jon Stark and Daenerys Targaryen. While other characters did the heavy lifting down below, Jon and Dany spent most of the episode flying in the clouds, useless and, in the dimly lit scenes, pretty hard to see.
That the show’s main characters were so under-utilized in The Ultimate Battle Sequence was not lost on “Game of Thrones” Twitter, which combined Westeros with the Warriors in the most perfect way imaginable.
Twitter user yasmin paired an old clip of the Warriors bench with the caption “us all watching jon and dany be useless for most of the battle.” The clip is from a 2016 Warriors-Lakers game in which Golden State was blown out by L.A.; as the ESPN camera pans down the bench, the disappointed, angry faces of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and others display the perfect reactions to “Game of Thrones.”
For disappointed fans, we likely haven’t see the last dragon battle of the series, however. In next week’s preview, both of Daenerys’ dragons are seen — and they’re probably headed soon to King’s Landing.
There are three episodes left before the series finale on May 19.
