Steve Kerr paints a dark picture of gun violence: ‘We’re all vulnerable’

During a practice with the U.S. men’s national team ahead of the 2019 FIBA World Cup, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr continued his advocacy against gun violence and took aim at “gutless leadership” in Washington.

“I think about it all the time,” Kerr told the Bay Area News Group Monday. “Somebody could walk in the door in the gym right now and start spraying us with an AR-15. They could. It might happen because we’re all vulnerable, whether we go to a concert, a church, the mall or go to the movie theatre or a school.”

The Warriors coach has been outspoken on the issue of gun violence, and regularly uses Twitter to push for stronger gun control laws and slam politicians for inaction.

“It’s up to all of us, especially since so many of our government ‘leaders’ value their jobs and NRA contributions more than they value human life,” he tweeted Monday, one of more than 30 political tweets and re-tweets he’s sent since the weekend shootings.

Kerr previously wore a pro-gun control shirt to Game 2 of the 2019 NBA Finals, and participated in a local town hall about gun violence in March 2018.

The Warriors coach clarified on Monday that he merely wants to see assault weapons (specifically AR-15s) outlawed, and doesn’t believe other guns should be removed from society.

“A lot of my friends have had guns,” he told Bay Area News Group. “They weren’t carrying around AR-15’s. They had hunting rifles. This is not what it’s about. This is not about someone’s ability to own a gun. It’s about someone’s ability to have a military-style assault rifle with huge magazines.”
