SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — A suspect was taken into custody Wednesday after he stole two vehicles, including an ice cream truck, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., the ice cream truck was stolen at gunpoint in the area of Sunrise Boulevard and Fitzgerald Road, said Sgt. Tess Deterding with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

An officer saw the ice cream truck crash on Douglas Street, just west of Sunrise Boulevard.

The suspect then got out of the truck, approached the driver of a black BMW and demanded the car. The driver of the BMW got out of her car and the suspect drove off, leading authorities on a chase.

During the chase, the suspect crashed into a car in the area of Douglas Street and Zinfandel Drive, causing the victim’s car to roll. The driver of that car was hospitalized with minor injuries, Deterding said.

Witnesses reported seeing the suspect run into a nearby field with a handgun.

A SWAT team responded, and the suspect was detained in the field, Deterding said. The suspect was taken to the hospital to get treatment for minor injuries. His identity will be released after he is booked, the sheriff’s office said.

No shots were fired during the incident, Deterding said.
