Anyone who’s ever fired up Madden knows the only skill that really matters is speed. If you get a guy who can take a handoff and sprint around the edge of the defense, you’re basically unstoppable. That means the 49ers, a roughly average team, might be one of the best options available in the latest edition of the game.
EA dropped their full Madden 2020 ratings on Monday, leading fans of every team to pore over the numbers and slam or praise the game on social media for either overrating or underrating their favorite players. Fans of the Niners found some great news: the two fastest running backs in the game are both playing in San Francisco.
Matt Breida and Tevin Coleman, who both have a 94 speed rating, are tops among all of the halfbacks. Breida, who the team signed in 2017 as an undrafted free agent, racked up 813 rushing yards last year on an impressive 5.3 yards-per-carry average. Tevin Coleman signed with the Niners over the offseason after spending four years backing up Devonta Freeman in Atlanta. Both are extremely speedy and fun.
Less fun: Jimmy Garoppolo ranks 21st among quarterbacks with a 78 overall rating. Some 49ers fans were not pleased with this decision.
“They made Jimmy G a 78 ? Wow smh,” wrote one Twitter user. “Blocking MADDEN asap.”
Richard Sherman, with a 93 overall ranking, is the team’s best player by the game’s metrics. If you want to click around and look at the Madden ratings for yourself, feel free to do so here.
