Blessed with the 2nd pick in next month’s NFL Draft, 49ers fans are salivating over the prospects available to them after finishing 4-12 in the 2018 season. If recent reports are correct, it seems possible that Nick Bosa, the younger brother of Chargers star Joey, might fall to the team if the Cardinals opt for quarterback Kyler Murray with the first pick.
Bosa is widely considered the best player in the draft, and the Niners are in a good spot with their quarterback position locked up for the foreseeable future once Jimmy Garoppolo returns from his ACL tear.
The draft isn’t the only place for the Niners to improve their squad, of course. The start of free agency is just around the corner, and there are some players available that might significantly improve the team’s odds of competing in the NFC West next year.
The safety position is a good place to start. There really aren’t any standouts on the roster at the moment, meaning the team could make a significant impact by signing a guy like Earl Thomas, who Richard Sherman has publicly campaigned for the team to ink. If they can’t make Thomas happen, they might try to go after another ball-hawk type like Tyrann Mathieu or Lamarcus Joyner, who are both available at the moment.
Wide receiver is another obvious hole. The team declined to pick up Pierre Garçon’s contract, meaning they’d enter the 2019 season with Dante Pettis in a starting role. (This is suboptimal.) Thankfully, guys like Adam Humphries or Golden Tate would slot in well as a replacement for Garçon.
