The Cleveland Browns really seem to want a 49ers coach

It’s great to win in the NFL, but it isn’t as fun when other teams are trying to steal all your good coaches. Unfortunately for the 49ers, the Cleveland Browns are reportedly interested in hiring three of their assistant coaches, according to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

In addition to Niners’ defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who will interview with the Browns for their head coach opening, the Browns reportedly have their eye on both run game coordinator Mike McDaniel and passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur, who both followed Shanahan to San Francisco in 2017 after stints working for the Atlanta Falcons.

McDaniel joined the Niners after two years with the Falcons as an offensive assistant. The 36-year-old played college football at Yale, joining the Broncos’ coaching staff as an intern in 2005 after graduation. Schefter says McDaniel will “likely” interview with the Browns, but notes that “nothing” is “set up just yet.”

LaFleur is the younger brother of Packers’ head coach Matt LaFleur, who took the reins in Green Bay at the start of the 2019 season. Mike, who is just 32, graduated from Elmurst College in 2009. Prior to his time in San Francisco, LaFleur worked with the Falcons’ wide receivers.
