U.S. routs Trinidad and Tobago to advance to CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals

Gyasi Zardes scored two goals in a three-minute span in the second half and the U.S. men’s soccer team recorded a 6-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago — which handed the Americans a nightmarish loss two years ago — in Cleveland in the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Saturday night.

Aaron Long scored his first two international goals, and Christian Pulisic and Paul Arriola had one each during a five-goal barrage in the second half. The U.S. cruised to its second shutout this week and clinched a quarterfinal berth on June 30.

It was the first matchup between the U.S. and Trinidad and Tobago since Oct. 10, 2017, when the Americans, needing only a tie to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, lost 2-1 to the Soca Warriors.

• In the opening match in Cleveland, Panama scored twice in each half to down Guyana 4-2.

• At the Copa America in Brazil, the host routed Peru 5-0 in Sao Paulo to reach the quarterfinals. … Darwin Machis scored in each half as Venezuela advanced with a 3-1 win over Bolivia in Belo Horizonte.

Ortiz update: The wife of David Ortiz, who was shot in the Dominican Republic earlier this month, said the former baseball All-Star has been moved out of intensive care at a Boston hospital. Tiffany Ortiz said in a statement that the her husband is in good condition.

Tennis: Roger Federer will play David Goffin in the final of the Halle Open in Germany after defeating Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3, 6-3. Goffin beat Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (4), 6-3.

• Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray and Feliciano Lopez beat third-seeded Henri Kontinen and John Peers 7-5, 6-7 (5), 10-7 to reach the doubles final in the Queens Club tournament in London. Lopez, 37, will play Gilles Simon in the singles final first.

• French Open champion Ash Barty will play Julia Goerges for the Birmingham (England) Classic title and the world No. 1 ranking Sunday. Barty beat Barbora Strycova 6-4, 6-4 and Goerges defeated Petra Martic 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.

Motor sports: Colton Herta, 19, became the youngest pole winner in IndyCar history, topping qualifying for Sunday’s race at Road America at Elkhart Lake, Wis. … In Formula One, Lewis Hamilton clinched a record-extending 86th career pole position for Sunday’s French Grand Prix in Le Castellet.

WNBA: Odyssey Sims scored 20 points and Sylvia Fowles had 19 points and 10 rebounds in host Minnesota’s 92-83 victory over the New York. … Dearica Hamby scored 27 points as host Las Vegas beat Dallas 86-68.
