Update: Carlos Hernandez, Jr., 21, or Maia Herman-Kitami, 18, were located “safe and well” inside their vehicle at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, the Glenn County Sheriff’s Office said. The couple were located on County Road 312 in an area known as Oceanside. According to authorities, Hernandez’s Jeep had gotten stuck in the snow. The couple are heading home.
End of update.
Authorities are searching for a young couple from San Francisco who were reported missing after not returning from a camping trip in Mendocino.
Helicopters combed the snow-laden Mendocino National Forest Monday, but did not find a sign of Carlos Hernandez, Jr., 21, or Maia Herman-Kitami, 18, who planned to go off-roading in Hernandez’ Jeep and camp at Alder Springs between Jan. 30 and Feb. 1, Action News Now reported.
Hernandez and his father had reportedly visited the area multiple times and had mapped out coordinates for the trip.
The couple was reported missing on Saturday night when they did not return as planned and family members could not get into contact with them, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department said.
Over the weekend, a snowstorm barreled through the area, raising concerns the couple was trapped in the snow. Hernandez’s sister, Fabi Hernandez, said in a Facebook post she believed they had enough equipment to stay warm, but feared they lacked enough food to get them through the weekend.
The last known contact with family members was a text on Jan. 30 saying the couple were losing service but would text when they arrived at their campground, ABC7 reported. Officials told Action News that they tried to track the couple’s phones, but they are either out-of-service or switched off.
Search-and-rescue efforts began Sunday morning and continued into Monday.
The couple was traveling in a 2004 yellow Jeep Wrangler with license plate number 7NAJ240
Anyone with information about the couple’s whereabouts should contact the Glenn County Sheriff’s office at 530-934-6441.
