Carli Lloyd

Coming off her second Women’s World Cup title, the U.S. forward says she is considering potential offers to kick in the NFL after her recent 55-yard field goal at a Philadelphia Eagles practice. “I was laughing about it with my husband at first, but now I’m sort of entertaining the idea,” Lloyd told NBCSports Philadelphia before throwing out the first pitch Tuesday before the Phillies played the Pirates (above). “I know that I definitely could do it because anything I set my mind to do, I can do it. And I actually do kick balls for a living. So, yeah, it’s all about the technique, and we’ll see what happens.”

Nicole Gibbs

The American lost in the first round of the U.S. Open to No. 4 seed Simona Halep 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. But Gibbs has already won her most important victory of the year: beating cancer. Tuesday was her return to Grand Slam tennis after surgery in May to remove a tumor in her mouth, a form of oral cancer. “I’m definitely bummed out,” Gibbs said after the loss. “At the same time, I think I do have a new perspective, that it’s not life and death out there. It’s a privilege to be on a court like that against a player like that. I was just really trying to soak up the moment.”
