Vegas no longer thinks you’d be crazy to bet on a Giants World Series

A month ago, the odds of the San Francisco Giants playing for another World Series ring this decade were about as good as your chances of scoring a $4 beer at Oracle Park. But thanks to a completely unforeseen hot streak, bookies now have the team in the MLB playoff betting picture.

As of Wednesday afternoon, online gaming site Bovada listed the Giants as +4000 to win it all this year, meaning a single dollar wagered would earn you $40 in the event of a Giants World Series victory. In June some sportsbooks were offering a 500-1 line on the Giants. That’s the bookie equivalent of no chance.

San Francisco opened the season as the biggest long shot in the National League at 100-1. Now 15 MLB teams, including seven from the National League, face tougher odds. That’s despite the fact that the 67-36 Dodgers have already built up a massive lead in the divisional race, meaning the Giants’ best hope is likely to fight their way through the Wild Card round.

For months the Giants have been rumored to be shopping veteran players leading up to the trade deadline on July 31, but the Giants are 15-3 in July and only two games out of the final Wild Card spot starting play Wednesday.

The surge has lead many to speculate that trade chips like pitcher Madison Bumgarner may be staying for a once-improbable playoff push.
