Vote to Determine Future of Middle School in Oakland

The fate of a middle school in Oakland will come down to a vote slated for Monday evening.

Roots International Academy in East Oakland could be the first of more than two dozen schools to close in Oakland.

The possible school closure is a part of a larger plan by the Oakland Unified School District as it grapples with budget issues. The district has said there are too many schools in regards to how many students they oversee.

If the school board votes to close the school, the more than 200 students at the school will be relocated to other nearby middle schools.

As the future of Roots International Academy hangs in the balance, teachers in the district could be planning a strike as early as next month.
