WATSONVILLE, Calif. —
Watsonville Police arrested a woman who they say went on a vandalism spree, causing $15,000 worth of damage to a Watsonville church.
Investigators say 23-year-old Jackeline Chavira hit multiple businesses Wednesday before making her way to St. Patrick’s Church on Main Street.
Surveillance video shows Chavira walking into the church at 12:15 pm. She went up to the alter and pushed over a 15 foot crucifix statue. Police say Chavira then ran into a prayer room and threw another religious statue on the ground before tearing down two large pieces of artwork. Two parishioners were in the room praying when it happened.
Police say Chavira was involved in a series of incidents that started at 11:40 a.m. and continued until her arrest just before 2:15 pm. In addition to the incident at the church, Chavira is accused of stealing roses from a store, stealing and breaking a religious statue at another store and stealing a soda.
Chavira was arrested and booked into the county jail for vandalizing a place of worship, defacing property, burglary and disobeying a court order. Her bail was set at $25,000.
