The Yankees placed outfielder Aaron Judge on the injured list Sunday because of a strained left oblique that he sustained Saturday while hitting a sixth-inning single against Kansas City.
Judge became the Yankees’ 13th player on the IL, a group that includes Giancarlo Stanton (strained left biceps), Aaron Hicks (back strain), Gary Sanchez (strained left calf), Didi Gregorius (Tommy John surgery) and Miguel Andújar (torn labrum in right shoulder).
“Pretty significant strain in there,” manager Aaron Boone said of Judge’s injury.
Shoemaker out: Toronto right-hander Matt Shoemaker will miss the rest of the season because of a torn left ACL.
Shoemaker, placed on the IL on Sunday, hurt the knee during his start against the A’s on Saturday.
“I was really hoping for a knee sprain,” said Shoemaker, who is 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA. “I knew what I felt. It didn’t feel right, but I was just hoping for a knee sprain.”
Ohtani update: Angels manager Brad Ausmus threw batting practice to Shohei Ohtani on Saturday, but said Sunday there is no updated timetable for the Japanese two-way player’s return. Ohtani, who was 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 10 starts and batted .285 with 22 homers and 61 RBIs to earn Rookie of the Year honors last season, had elbow surgery Oct. 1.
“We’ve been pretty steadfast on sticking to his schedule and being cautious with him to avoid any long-term damage to his elbow,” Ausmus said.
Injury report: Tampa Bay outfielder Austin Meadows went on the IL because of a strained right thumb and the team activated former A’s infielder Joey Wendle. … Milwaukee second baseman Mike Moustakas said he will try to play through a fracture to the tip of his right ring finger, the injury the result of a groundball that struck his hand Saturday.
