49ers rookie receiver Deebo Samuel is set to make $7.7 million over the next four years. We already know where over $3,700 of that went Wednesday night.
The 49ers’ receiver unit had its “rookie dinner” at Shanahan’s steakhouse in Denver as they practice for an exhibition game against the Broncos. Samuel, the rookie of honor, posted an Instagram story of the terrifying bill his teammates left him to pay: $3,713.58. (It was spotted by Alex Tran of Niners Nation).
“Lord. Glad I don’t have to do this again. Rookie duties,” reads Samuel’s caption.
And yes, the Shanahan’s name isn’t a coincidence: it’s owned by Mike Shanahan, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan’s father. According to the receipt, there was no family discount applied.
Where exactly did that money go? The Shanahan’s check says there were 10 guests served a total of 64 items. And from what we can read, the 49ers receivers love their shellfish.
There were two orders of the seafood tower (each of which serves four people) for a combined $310; $54 for Dungeness crab; $122 for crab legs; $42 for crab cakes; $52.50 for coco shrimp; $36 for lobster mac and cheese; and, oh, we’ll just stop there because our wallets are melting just looking at this.
Along with having to carry veterans’ bags and getting taped to goal posts, picking up the check is among the most common hazing rituals NFL rookie have to endure. Niners receiver Dante Pettis, just a year removed from his own rookie season, posted a story at the dinner “thanking” Samuel during dessert, which looks like a giant serving of glorified s’mores.
“It’s a marshmallow!” Pettis appears to say in the story. “I appreciate it Deebo, thank you!”
Samuel is seen laughing in the clip, and he’ll presumably look back fondly at the expensive bonding experience as long as Jimmy Garoppolo keeps him well fed on the field.
