At least one player came out smelling like roses in the aftermath of the Antonio Brown train wreck.
The Oakland Raiders lured Keelan Doss from the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad for an active roster spot paying a guaranteed $495,000 plus a $300,000 bonus, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. Doss had been making a non-guaranteed $255,000 with the Jags.
The undrafted rookie and Alameda native, heralded as a “hometown hero” on HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” did not make the Raider’s 53-man squad and was waived by the Raiders. Doss chose to join the Jaguars’ practice squad instead of the Raiders’.
But things change. Brown, the star receiver signed by Oakland in the offseason, froze his feet, refused to wear a new, mandated helmet and reportedly called his boss a racially charged name to his face. The insult was the final straw, so the Raiders fined him, voiding his contract’s guaranteed money, and then released him.
Now he’s Bill Belichik’s problem. Brown signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots.
Keelan Doss went from a non-guaranteed $255,000 salary to $795,000 fully guaranteed plus an active roster spot in two days, thanks to the Antonio Brown situation. A guy we thought would be a mid-round pick but went undrafted is now getting money comparable to a fourth-rounder.

Meanwhile the Raiders, now thin at wide receiver, decided they wanted Doss back. As Garafolo notes, they made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.
But why did the Raiders waive him in the first place?
“Just so we’re on the same page. He did a heck of a job,” coach John Gruden told reporters last week. “We tried to keep him on practice squad. He felt he had a better opportunity to make the team in Jacksonville. So we hate to see him go. We’re happy for his future.”
That future will now be in Oakland.
