The inevitable — and one-sided — Smash Mouth vs. Drake beef is here.
Smash Mouth, the San Jose band famous for earworm-y ’90s hits like “All Star,” is best-known today for hitting the local county fair circuit and their angry, profane tweets about Bay Area sports teams. You may recall their greatest Twitter hits such as:
— Calling Bruce Bochy’s decision to announce his retirement before the Giants season began a “stupid ass move!!!!“”
— Defending their reputation relentlessly against harmless burns from random people on the internet
— Yelling at Bryce Harper for not taking their advice to sign with the Giants
And now Smash Mouth have added Drake to their list of targets, as the rapper’s beloved Toronto Raptors will be facing the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals.
“Yo @drake When the ball is in-play sit the FCK down!” Smash Mouth tweeted unprompted on Sunday. “That aint gonna fly in Oakland! #GlorifiedMascot”
The tweet was accompanied by a pixelated photo-of-a-TV-screen, showing Drake standing up courtside during a Raptors game. It’s an unnecessary visual accompaniment for anyone who has watched an NBA game in Toronto.
Drake’s sideline antics are well-documented, treasured by Raptors fans and hated by literally everyone else. He’s so ingratiated with the team — and its security staff, no doubt — that he practically has free rein. Drake wanders the sideline, joyfully taunting opposing players, making airplane arms and giving Raptors coach Nick Nurse shoulder massages.
Whether or not that flies in Oakland remains to be seen. But the tweet definitely didn’t fly among Smash Mouth haters on Twitter.
“Tough tweet from a band that was literally made famous by Shrek,” one person responded.
“Smashmouth taking trash like it’s ’99” added another.
