The high-scoring U.S. women’s soccer forward who went to Cal cleaned up at the ESPYs Wednesday night, winning Female Athlete of the Year and sharing the Best Team award with her Women’s World Cup champion teammates. “Sorry, but this is probably the second-best trophy we won this week,” Morgan said jokingly, hoisting her individual trophy. Morgan also thanked ESPN for its recent deal to televise NWSL games. “When the World Cup is behind us, it is the professional league that we need to continually lift up and grow,” she said. “Investment in women and girls should not only occur on the playing fields but in more storytelling of bad-ass, amazing women who continue to show that we are more than just athletes.”
The longtime Boston Red Sox designated hitter is recovering from a third surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital after experiencing complications resulting from a gunshot wound. Ortiz’s wife, Tiffany, said in a statement that he is “recovering well and in good spirits.” Ortiz was shot in the back at a bar in the Dominican Republic last month. Police have said he was mistaken for another man who was sitting near him at the club. “We continue to be incredibly appreciative of the kindness and compassion shown to David and to our entire family during his difficult time,” Tiffany Ortiz said.
