Andre Iguodala believes both Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson will re-sign with the Golden State Warriors in the coming weeks, and couldn’t stop himself from taking a jab at New York Knicks fans who have been drooling over Durant since last fall.
During a Monday appearance on CNBC’s “Power Lunch,” Iguodala said he’s been in contact with Thompson and Durant, and “apologized” to Knicks fans.
“I think they’ll both be back with the Golden State Warriors,” he said. “We’re like brothers, we keep in contact, but regardless of any of that, if both did decide to leave they would still be my brother. I would still keep in contact with them as much as possible. I’m just wishing the best for those guys and they come back full strength.”
After being told he was crushing the hopes of Knicks fans, Iguodala laughed and said, “Nobody is going to the Knicks, sorry.”
He may be right.
There was a time in the spring when it looked like the Knicks could have a trio of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Zion Williamson leading the team back to relevance next season, but now there’s a good chance they get none of the three.
The Knicks missed out on Williamson after losing the NBA Draft lottery to the New Orleans Pelicans, and according to multiple reports, Kyrie Irving is “expected” to sign with the Brooklyn Nets when free agency opens next week. That would leave only Durant available for the Knicks, although Irving is reportedly trying to convince Durant to sign with the Nets instead.
On Monday, Brooklyn became betting favorites at Caesars Palace to land the former MVP, with oddsmakers giving them -125 odds of signing him away from the Warriors.
The Warriors are given the second-best odds at +200, and are followed by the Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers at +500 and +800, respectively.
Free agents can begin negotiating with interested teams on June 30.
