Arizona All-Pro cornerback Patrick Peterson has been suspended for the first six games of the 2019 season for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.
The NFL did not specify Thursday which illegal substance Peterson allegedly used.
Peterson can participate in all offseason workouts and preseason games. He will be eligible to return Oct. 14, before Arizona’s game against the Giants.
“Patrick recognizes how disappointing this is for everyone in the organization as well as our fans,” the Cardinals said in a statement. “As we all do, he understands that regardless of intent he is ultimately responsible for everything he puts in his body.”
Peterson is still one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks at 28. The fifth overall pick of the 2011 draft, he has 23 career interceptions despite teams rarely testing him.
Peterson is a three-time All-Pro and he holds the franchise record with eight Pro Bowl appearances, a streak that will come to an end with his suspension. Under league rules, no player who was suspended for a violation of PED policy can play in the Pro Bowl.
49ers sign rookie: The 49ers signed defensive back Alex Brown to a three-year deal.
Brown was signed after participating in the team’s rookie minicamp this month as an undrafted free agent from South Carolina State. He appeared in 31 games during his five years with the Bulldogs and registered 90 tackles, 26 passes defensed, seven interceptions and one sack.
The Niners waived defensive lineman Damontre Moore to make room on the roster. Moore originally signed with the 49ers as a free agent in April after playing in the Alliance of American Football.
Briefly: New England signed free-agent linebacker Jamie Collins, marking his second stint with the team. Collins was a second-round draft pick by New England in 2013 and was traded to the Browns in 2016. He was released by Cleveland in March. The Patriots released defensive lineman Frank Herron. … Atlanta signed No. 14 overall draft pick Chris Lindstrom, a guard out of Boston College, to a four-year contract.
