During a media interview announcing his return to the Warriors, Andrew Bogut cleared the air about any perceived hard feelings he had after being traded in 2016 while Kevin Durant was joining the team.
“Honestly, if you have a chance to sign Kevin Durant, and I’m the odd man out cause I’m making 12 million dollars the next season and they had to free up some cap space, I would do that to myself if I was the GM,” Bogut said in press conference held in Sydney, Australia.
“I’m not under any illusions that I’m as good as KD,” he added.
Although he was disappointed with the move, Bogut felt the media overplayed any friction he had about leaving the Warriors, pointing out that he has kept in touch with his former teammates Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. Golden State was the only NBA team that Bogut considered playing for, calling his time previous career with the team ‘special.’ He also is coming to Oakland fully aware that he will be returning as a role player.

Bogut will only play with the Warriors through the end of this season. His Australian team, the NBL’s Sydney Kings, have the 7-foot center under contract for their next season. The Kings’ season ended last week with a loss in the NBL playoff semifinals. Bogut was named the MVP of the league averaging 11.4 points and 11.6 rebounds. He will return to Sydney for the 2019-2020 season, which starts in October.
“This is an opportunity that I thought long and hard about and I would probably be crazy to give up. It’s a chance to win a championship on one of the greatest teams in basketball,” he said.
“If I don’t play a minute, I just think it’s really cool to go somewhere where I am valued, number one, not only as a basketball player, but for my basketball IQ and a person and hopefully add another ring to the collection.”
The Australian will have to file for a USA work visa, and he could rejoin the Warriors during their upcoming four-game road trip. that starts against the Rockets in Houston next Tuesday.
